We’re here to help with any concern about suicide - concern about yourself, someone else, or you’ve lost someone to suicide. You can call, anytime. Regardless of what problems you are dealing with, you’ll be connected with a caring, highly trained counselor.

What if I need resources? 
We have info on community mental health care centers across the state plus other helpful statewide info. For other referrals, we recommend calling 211 - an info and resource service available to Kansas residents.

What happens when I call? 
When you call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, you will hear a message saying you have reached the NSPL. Hold music will play while your call is routed to the Lifeline center for your area code. We are the center for Kansas, except Sedgwick County.  If you live in Kansas but your phone has an out-of-state area code, please reach our center directly at 785-841-2345.

If I tell you I’m thinking about suicide, will you call the police? 
We are a safe and confidential space for you to talk about what you’re going through. We want you to talk openly. If we believe you’re in immediate medical danger, we will talk with you about that and make a plan together.

What if I lost someone to suicide? 
While no one can erase the pain of losing someone to suicide, getting the support you need can help. We’re available 24 hours a day, in person or by phone. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. We are the Lifeline Center for Kansas. I’m not suicidal, I’m just having a hard time right now. Can I still call? 
Yes. No matter what problems you are dealing with, we are here to listen and help you figure out how to get through it.

Who answers the calls? 
Our staff is made up of very caring and skilled volunteer paraprofessional counselors and professional staff. The majority of our staff are volunteers, and our training is 100 hours long - that’s how committed we are to helping you.

Can I speak with a volunteer counselor in person? 
We generally accept walk-ins in Lawrence from 9-4 Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Please call us before coming in to be sure our counselors will be available.  

Do you offer ongoing counseling? 
We now offer ongoing counseling by Master-level Social Work students in Lawrence. Rates are $10 per session regardless of insurance coverage and are available by appointment. Please contact Kristin Vernon to schedule an intake appointment. 

What happens when I call the local number? 
When you call our center at 785-841-2345, our skilled, highly trained counselors will answer, “Hello, Headquarters,” and be ready to listen and help you with whatever concern you have. Your call is free and confidential.
