December 2011

For yet another year-our 42nd in a row-Headquarters Counseling Center maintained our counseling and suicide prevention hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Funding challenges loom for 2012, and we are determined to make next year even more successful than our energetic 2011.

We made many new friends-and even gained an Angel-at our annual Life Support Refresher, which in 2011 honored our first Life Saver award recipient, the fabulous Angel Morris. Our summer motorcycle rally through the highways and byways of Douglas County attracted more riders than ever. Yet again, Headquarters was honored to be chosen as Lawrence Amateur Golf Association's official community partner for the City Championship, which in 2011 was held at both Eagle Bend and the Lawrence Country Club.

Dedicated volunteers and tireless staff answered more than 20,000 calls from across Kansas at our 24-hour counseling center, nearly 25 percent of which were from persons at risk of suicide or confronting issues of depression. More than 1,000 were from children calling our Phone A Friend line. Hundreds were survivors of abuse or rape, and many were from military members and their families. Participation in our suicide bereavement group was higher than ever. And we continued our community outreach by taking Internet safety education to children in their schools.

These are our joys and our successes, both of which we are eager to share with our longtime friends and new acquaintances. And, like everyone else in these times of need, we also must face our challenges. Our funding models-including governmental and charitable agencies, and longtime support from the KU Student Senate-are all undergoing fundamental changes that frankly threaten our mission of providing help whenever it's needed to our fellow Kansans in their moments of greatest need.

In this season of giving, we hope that you will keep Headquarters Counseling Center in your charitable considerations. And regardless of whatever financial contribution you might be able to offer at this time, please know that we always consider the joys of friendship and community to be the most valuable gifts, gifts that we receive with sincere gratitude.

With best wishes for the upcoming year,
