WHAT IS THE HEADQUARTERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

Headquarters is the group of people currently on the volunteer staff, the paid staff, and the Board of Directors. We are committed to working together with courtesy, respect, trust and caring. We value fair treatment and open communication in our work together.

The members of the Board of Directors and the paid staff work together to support the volunteer staff in the provision of services of Headquarters Counseling Center to the community. Board members and paid staff are responsible for helping provide continuity for the agency, to ensure its growth in positive, helpful directions.

The Board of Directors of Headquarters Counseling Center is at once specific and vague. It is specific in the sense that it has a historic tradition, a set of bylaws, and regular meetings. At the same time, it is vague in that the actual functions of the board are very different from most other boards because at Headquarters Counseling Center, the Board works with the volunteer staff and paid staff in the decision making process with a goal of consensus.

Board members are encouraged to become familiar with Headquarters Counseling Center. The more we know of each other, the more we’ll all feel comfortable working together. You are invited to attend an information meeting for prospective volunteers, read our training manual, spend some time at Headquarters talking with on-duty staff, and attend joint staff and Board activities.

Regular duties of a Board member include: attendance at monthly Board meetings, occasional participation on a committee (such as finance, community awareness, personnel), adding your perspective on topics (or emergencies) related to the day-to-day operation of Headquarters Counseling Center and offering feedback and support to the staff.

As you might guess, Board membership requires certain characteristics and abilities: enthusiasm, commitment, patience, wisdom, and a sense of humor – and a willingness to work with crowds.

Thank you for considering joining us!
